The Faculty of Nursing Holds a Clinical Workshop Entitled “Developmental Supportive Care for High-Risk Newborns in Neonatal Intensive Care Units”

The Faculty of Nursing at Al-Ahliyya Amman University held a workshop entitled “Developmental Supportive Care for High-Risk Newborns in NICUs,” targeting clinical supervisors at the faculty. The workshop was delivered by Clinical Supervisor and Certified International Trainer Efat Al-Ma’ayta and was accredited by the Jordan Nursing Council for continuous professional development. The workshop was interactive and aligned with ACEN accreditation standards, focusing on defining the concept of developmental supportive care, its principles and components, including individualized care and family involvement. It addressed the short- and long-term benefits of developmental care on neurodevelopmental, physiological, and emotional outcomes for high-risk newborns. Scientific evidence was presented showing its effectiveness in improving weight gain, reducing hospital stay, and enhancing cognitive and motor growth. The workshop also examined environmental risks in NICUs, such as noise, lighting, frequent handling, and painful procedures, and their negative effects on infants’ health and development. A hands-on simulation session allowed participants to practice real-life scenarios involving high-risk newborns, reflect on appropriate nursing interventions, and design developmental care plans. The role of NICU nurses in implementing and advocating for developmental care practices was discussed, emphasizing the need to educate and support families in participating actively in newborn care. By the end, participants demonstrated their ability to integrate comprehensive developmental principles into daily nursing practice, optimize NICU environments, and communicate effectively with families to enhance developmental outcomes for their infants.
