Students of the Faculty of Engineering at Al-Ahliyya Amman University win first place in the Seventh National Technological Festival

Al-Ahliyya Amman University acclaimed the first place in the Seventh National Technological Festival, on the biomedical and health technology theme. The Festival was hosted this year by Yarmouk University with the participation of 14 Jordanian universities. Al-Ahliyya Amman University participated through the project entitled “Robotic Gripper Arm”, prepared by student Noor Sanora of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, under the supervision of Dr. Amar Natsheh. The idea of the project is based on designing a robot arm to assist people with special needs to do their everyday tasks by giving voice commands to the robot. Persons with imputed lower limbs (legs) can give voice commands to the robot to bring up things from other places. This system consists of two major units: the transmitter unit and receiver unit. The user gives a voice command which is analyzed in the Voice Recognition circuit through Micro-Controllers. The command is then sent to the receiver. The receiver unit receives and responds by implementing the sent movements that resemble natural hand movements. These movements are controlled by six Servo Motors, which are connected through (Arduino) circuit in the robot. In addition, it is possible for the user to control the robot when given tasks from an adjacent room by connecting the camera installed on the robot with a computer in the user’s room. The most important feature of this robot is its low cost and the ability to control it by voice. Therefore, it is suitable for use by patients with quadriplegia or people who suffer from full upper or lower limb amputation.
