The AAU Faculty of Law Hosts the Mock Trials Competition in “the Humanitarian International Law and the International Criminal Law”
Under the patronage of Al-Ahliyya Amman University and in cooperation with the International Committee of Red Cross and the National Committee of the Humanitarian Law, the AAU Faculty of law hosted the Third Annual Competition of the mock trials in the Humanitarian International Law and the International Criminal Law. In this event which took place on Thursday, 16/11/2017, the following Jordanian public and private universities participated: Al-Ahliyya Amman University, Philadelphia University, Yarmouk University, Al-Albait University, Jadara University, Al-Isra’ University, Ajloun National University, Al-Zarqa University, Irbid Private University, the Middle East University, University of Applied Sciences, Petra University and Jarash University.The Vice President of the AAU, Prof. Suliman Al-Lawzy delivered a speech during the opening ceremony which was held in the Nizar Qabani Theater. Prof. Al-Lawzy stated that “this activity links the theoretical aspect with the practical one in the courses of the Faculty of Law. He emphasized that the world nowadays advocates the trial procedures whereby students become acquainted with the nature of the judicial work lest the legal science remains just academic information not close to the courts with its rituals and practices which students may not find in the books of law”. He stressed the importance of holding periodic students meetings which enhance the spirit of cooperation and affection and exchanging experiences among students. It also contributes in shaping their legal characters and preparing them to be the future legal leaders in the Arab World. He added that the AAU’s eight faculties which reflect the AAU vision and mission encourage hosting such activities to provide a supportive academic environment of excellence and to prepare specialized and qualified human cadres in various fields of knowledge. On his part, the retired Lieutenant General, Ma’moon Al-Khasawneh, delivered a speech on behalf of the National Committee of the Humanitarian International Law where he confirmed that university education in Jordan has been developed widely in public and private universities. He noted that Jordan provides the Arab region with distinctive scientific competences in all fields of specializations. Meanwhile, Dr. Shaima Abu Farha who represents the International Committee of Red Cross posited that holding such activities aims to polish the students’ legal skills and to promote awareness of content and legal implications in an interesting manner. During the activities of this competition, the participating teams competed actively and transparently before specialized arbitration bodies. The four mock trial sessions took place in the Nizar Qabani Theater and the Judge Mousa Al-Saket Hall. At the end, the final session was held before the arbitration body and announced that Philadelphia University team won the competition cup. The arbitration body also considered the other teams as winners as the Philadelphia team because of their competence and excellence. In the conclusion of this competition, Dr. Muhammad Al-Tarawneh the Judge of the Court of Cassation praised the level of the competing teams and their competence. Meanwhile, the AAU Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Yousef Mifleh Al-Abadi, thanked the participating teams on behalf of the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the AAU President. Dr. Al-Abadi commended those who contributed to the success of this event. At the end, Prof. Al-Lawzy distributed certificates, awards and shields to the sponsors of the competition.
