Under the patronage of Dr. Abdullah Nsour, Prime Minister, in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Hamed, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Deputy Parton of the event, and President of Al-Ahliyya Amman University, Prof. Dr. Sadeq Hamed, the Federation of Arab Engineers/Energy Commitee, in cooperation with the Jordanian Engineers Association, held a seminar entitled “Energy Reality: Consumption and Rationalization in the Arab World” at Al-Ahliyya Amman University/ Nizar Qabbani Audotorium on the occasion of the golden anniversary of the Federation of Arab Engineers. At the beginning of the seminar, HE Eng. Wael Sabri, Head of the Preparatory Committee, welcomed the attendees and started his speech with a brief presentation about the establishment of the Federation of Arab Engineers and its objectives. He noted that these objectives are focused on promoting scientific research in the Arab world, exchange of information and expertise in various professional and technical fields, as well as enhancing the scientific and professional efficiency of Arab engineers which will lead to sustainable development in the Arab community. To that end, several standing and ad-hoc technical committees were formed, including the Energy Committee, which deals with energy issues in the Arab countries. Eng. Sabri added that on the occasion of the golden anniversary of the Federation of Arab Engineers, and in cooperation with the Jordanian Engineers Association, it was decided to hold a seminar on “Energy Reality: Consumption and Rationalization in the Arab World” in order to shed light on the pressing issues in the field of energy, its uses, and rationalization and to encourage investment in the energy field. His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Hamed, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Deputy Patron of the event, gave a speech in which he stressed the need for the Arab world to hold such seminars to come up with clear and realistic ideas that provide practical solutions. These solutions will help mitigate the energy crisis faced by the economies of some Arab countries, especially the national economy of Jordan which is facing huge and demanding challenges in the energy sector due to lack of domestic sources of energy and its dependence on importing more than 97 % of its total energy required for development. Dr. Hamed presented an overview of rationalization measures in the industrial sector, including promulgating the Renewable Energy and Energy Rationalization Law in 2012 and conducting a media plan to educate citizens about the rationalization of energy consumption.Deputy President of the Jordanian Engineers Association, Majid Tabaa, thanked Al-Ahliyya Amman University for sponsoring and hosting this seminar. In his speech, he pointed out to the large increase in demand for electricity in certain Arab countries.During the three sessions of the seminar, which lasted over two days, from 15-16/09/2013, a number of research papers and practical applications were discussed. The seminar was attended by engineers from various Arab countries. Sixteen research papers participated which addressed several topics including the rationalization of consumption and its impact on the national economy; management of change in institutions and its role in energy rationalization; practical applications to rationalize consumption and improve the efficiency of energy use; in addition to other research papers that were discussed in the three sessions attended by engineers from across the Arab world.
