Prof. Rida Al-Khawaldeh in a seminar highlighting the importance of increasing the support for scientific research based on the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II

Prof. Rida Al-Khawaldeh, Dean of Scientific Research and Dean of the Agricultural Technology Faculty at our University, and President of the Jordan Society for Scientific Research, Entrepreneurship & Creativity (JSSR) has confirmed and stressed the importance of increasing the support for scientific research based on the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II. This came in a seminar organized by the JSSR on “Scientific Publishing in Jordan: Costs and Impact” on Saturday 3/9/2022 to discuss the reality of scientific publications in Jordan in terms of analyzing the scientific output from a quantitative perspective and its impact since the beginning of scientific publication in Jordan up to this date using international databases. In addition, Prof. Al-Khawaldeh explained the JSSR role in promoting scientific research and assisting researchers in publishing research papers as well as continuing to hold seminars and lectures related to this field. The Vice President of Al-Zaytoonah University, Dr. Yousef Jaradat indicated that the rate of scientific publication in Jordan during the period from 2010 to 2016 was 2600 research papers in Scopus database where this number increased by 1000 research paper starting from 2017 to 2021, bringing the number to a total of 7914 in the year 2021. He also pointed out that the increase in scientific publication was accompanied by an increase in the impact factor of this publication through the increase in the number of citations for these research papers from all over the world.Dr. Jaradat gave an analytical presentation on the costs of scientific publication in Jordan in various journals, especially open access journals, where the costs of scientific publishing were tracked for several scientific journals and their publishers in which researchers publish in to come up with an initial evaluation of scientific publishing costs. Dr. Ahmad Manasrah, professor and researcher in Mechanical Engineering pointed out that 70% of the scientific journals listed in the directory of open access journals are free of charge journals that do not require publishing fees. Nonetheless, researchers are not publishing in such journals as they are not indexed in the Web of Science or Scopus Databases. Therefore, researchers from all around the world publish in journals that require payments of publication as they are often indexed and classified in global databases. Hence, Dr. Manasrah indicated that the average cost of publishing any article in open access journals in which are listed in the directory of open access journals has increased from $900 in 2011 to about $1,620 in 2021. For instance, researchers in Jordan published around 187 articles in the IEEE Access Journal with a payment of approximately $325,000 for publishing in this journal. In conclusion, the forums came out with resolutions and recommendations in order to raise the level of scientific publication in Jordan and increase its impact through marketing and directing researchers to publish in open source scientific journals of first and second categories which are often free or do not require high publishing fees.
