Lecture on audiovisual media in linguistic development

Is Arabic in danger?? This question was raised in a lecture titled “Audiovisual Media in Linguistic Development” delivered by Prof. Ahmed Khatib, Modern Literature and Criticism Professor, in the Faculty of Arts Forum held at Al-Ahliyya Amman University. Dr. Khatib initiated his lecture by talking about the risks facing the Arabic language in light of the challenges in the era of globalization. Dr Khatib spoke about the mother language and stressed that it is the national language, the most important feature of the Arab identity, which distinguishes it from other nations. Impairing the Arabic language entails distorting the Arab culture and poses a challenge to its presence and future, he noted. Dr. Ahmad Khatib addressed the concept of language development and language change. He confirmed that his study examines the relationship between audio-visual media and linguistic development. Dr. Khatib tackled the linguistic role of the media, which he considered as the most important in the life of our nation, particularly audiovisual media, which addresses all segments of the community without exclusion and is heard by individuals as well as the public. At the end of his lecture, Dr. Khatib recommended that we need a joint Arab media policy that would coordinate between media organizations and Arabic language academies. This is an institutional work that needs to be supported by government legislation, he noted.
