Al-Ahliyya Amman University’s Women’s Health Center Organizes an Awareness Workshop on "The Dangers of Smoking, E-Cigarettes, and Hookah"

The Women’s Health Center at the Faculty of Nursing, in collaboration with the Cancer Control Office at the King Hussein Cancer Center, organized an awareness workshop titled "The Dangers of Smoking, E-Cigarettes, and Hookah: Health Risks and Prevention." The goal of the workshop was to highlight the health risks associated with smoking in its various forms and ways to prevent it. The workshop began with a welcoming speech by Dr. Mona Al-Nsour, Director of the Center, who expressed gratitude to the Cancer Control Office for their fruitful collaboration and praised the active role played by nursing students in spreading health awareness. This was followed by a presentation from pharmacist Haneen Al-Momani, who introduceed the Women’s Health Center and its goals in supporting women’s and community health. She emphasized the importance of partnerships with health organizations to expand the reach of awareness efforts. Next, Ms. Rawan Shehab, Head of Health Awareness and Media, and Ms. Mona Mahmoud, Health Awareness and Media Specialist at the Cancer Control Office, gave a detailed presentation on the dangers of smoking in its various forms. The lecture focused on the health risks of hookah, explaining that a single smoking session is equivalent to smoking 40-60 cigarettes, which increases the risk of heart and lung diseases and respiratory infections. They also discussed e-cigarettes, clarifying that they are not a safe alternative to traditional smoking, as they contain harmful chemicals that can cause lung damage, nicotine addiction, and negative effects on the nervous system. The lecture also covered the dangers of secondhand smoke and its serious health effects on children and pregnant women, as well as its role in increasing the likelihood of chronic diseases like asthma and heart disease. The session concluded with information on free smoking cessation centers available across all provinces of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, provided by the King Hussein Cancer Center. These services include individual and group medical consultations, specialized psychological support, and medication treatments to help smokers quit gradually and sustainably. The workshop received a positive response from the attendees, represented by nursing students, who expressed their appreciation for the valuable information provided. They emphasized the importance of such events in raising health awareness and encouraging individuals to take practical steps to quit smoking and protect their health and the health of those around them. This event is part of a series of activities organized by the Women’s Health Center in collaboration with various health organizations to promote health awareness and spread a culture of prevention.
