Al-Ahliyya Amman University Participates in Training and Awareness Workshop on Controlling and Quitting Smoking
Deanship of Student Affairs /Sports Activity Division at Al-Ahliyya Amman University participated in Training and Awareness Workshop on Controlling and Quitting Smoking at the Meridien Hotel during the period from 15-17/4/2013 organized by King Hussein Cancer Center. During the workshop, participants discussed the risks of tobacco use and its association with non-communicable diseases, including cancer, diabetes, coronary, heart diseases, and chronic lung disease. Dr. Heba Ayoub of King Hussein Cancer Center tackled the extent of tobacco use issue globally and locally, the toxins contained in each cigarette, health risks of smoking and types of cancer caused by smoking. Dr. Feras Hawari, Director of Combating Cancer Office, and a medical team of Quitting Smoking Office, trained the participants on the scientifically proven treatment of tobacco addicts, which is based on advice, guidance and the use of medicines to draw up a treatment plan consistent with the needs of patients. The specialist doctors presented and discussed practical cases with the participants. The workshop was concluded with recommendations, namely, raising awareness, increasing the base of advocates (volunteers) and establishing groups, associations or clubs to combat smoking in schools and universities.
