Al-Ahliyya Amman University participates in International Day of Persons with Disabilities

As representatives of Al-Ahliyya Amman University, students from the Department of Special Education under the supervision of Dr. Annan Abu Mariam participated in the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities organized by the School of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Jordan under the auspices of His Royal Highness Prince Mer’ed bin Raad, President of the Supreme Council for The Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Secretary General of the Council Dr. Muhannad Al Azza attended the ceremony on behalf of His Highness. The Vice President of the University for Scientific Colleges Dr. Inam Khalaf, and the Dean of the Faculty Dr. Ziad Hawamda also attended.The ceremony included a speech delivered by Dr. Muhannad al-Azza during which he affirmed that this celebration is a confirmation message that the issue of disability is no longer the same as before, an issue on the sidelines or behind the scenes, but has become an issue that is strongly on the agenda of institutions in different fields: scientific, academic, executive or legislative. Dr. Inam Khalaf, Vice-President of the University for Scientific Colleges, pointed out that, in celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations raised a slogan in line with the conditions we are experiencing as an integrated society due to the Corona pandemic which is Persons with disabilities, leading and participating to reach a comprehensive, accessible and sustainable world for all after the pandemic. The ceremony included, in its various sessions, introducing invisible disabilities, educating and raising awareness about them, and identifying how to empower people with such disabilities. These include sensory processing disorders, syndromes of fibromyalgia, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, such as sleep disorders, stress, mental cognitive problems, learning difficulties, auditory disorders, and job burnout.The ceremony also included various panel discussions on topics such as the experience of people diagnosed with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and hidden symptoms of multiple sclerosis.Students of special education also participated in an exhibition of handicrafts, in which a number of associations concerned with the support, rehabilitation, and training of persons with disabilities participated. The exhibition included a number of crafts and displayed food products by persons with disabilities. It also included playing one video introducing invisible disabilities and another on some experiences of people with this type of disability.Dr. Annan Abu Mariam, head of the Department of Special Education, also stressed that participating in this ceremony comes within the vision of the department and the college which aims at keeping up with all that is modern, and at developing students’ skills and active participation in the development of society and promoting societal responsibility, as well. Dr. Abu Mariam also stressed that these participations contribute to the graduation of a group of students qualified and distinguished in extracurricular activities in the field of special education.
