English Language and Literature

The English Language and Literature Program continues to contribute to the development of Al-Ahliyya Amman University, the first private university in Jordan, as a prestigious academic institution at the local and regional levels. The program in English Language and Literature was offered in 1991. The program aims to build students’ cognitive skills as well as their analytical and critical abilities in English language and literature. It also stimulates an effective engagement in constructive scientific research.

  • Identifying the most important critical theories and schools in linguistics, literature and translation.
  • Understanding important works from different literary genres across different historical eras.
  • Skills:
  • Analyzing and criticizing different literary texts in the light of different literary and cultural approaches.
  • Utilizing the appropriate methodology and critical tools to write specialized research in critical literary and linguistic studies.
  • Demonstrating different English language skills through acquiring the necessary vocabulary, terminology and idioms to write sound texts and develop coherent conversations.

  • Students will be introduced to major works that belong to various literary genres across different historical eras, enabling them to appreciate and critically engage with works of literature.
  • Students will interpret literary texts in light of their cultural, socio-political and historical contexts.
  • Students will employ appropriate methodologies and critical tools to conduct specialized research in literary studies and advance scholarly knowledge in the field.
  • Students will develop diverse language skills, encompassing written and spoken communication, and will acquire the necessary vocabulary, terminology, and idioms to produce competent texts and engage in coherent conversations in English.
