The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences was established as one of the departments of the College of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences in 1991. It grants a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences with (137) credit hours distributed over four academic years. Since its establishment, the department has aimed to improve the quality of academic outputs for distinguished professional practice in the field of medical laboratory sciences, enhance professional ethics, and encourage applied scientific research.

Admission requirements of the Bachelor degree in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program include a High School Certificate or equivalent in the following:

Student Outcomes

Knowledge:

K1. Recognize a comprehensive and integrated understanding of basic biological and biomedical features of human nature in health and disease as a fundamental foundation for applied health sciences.

K2. Develop theoretical and practical knowledge to perform a full range of laboratory analytical services provided by different departments including immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, blood banking, microbiology, genetics, body fluids, and other emerging diagnostic analysis.

K3. Understand the concepts of different sample collections and methodologies followed to properly measure different laboratory analytes and recognize factors interfering with test results.

K4. Understand the pre-, analytical, and post-analytical processes involved in laboratory services by being knowledgeable about the concepts of quality assurance and quality improvement.

Skill:

S1. Present the skills and tools required for choosing the right test, the causes of inconsistent test results and deviations, and the connection between abnormal data and pathological situations.

S2. Operate a range of specialized equipment and laboratory testing procedures in compliance with established quality control measures, and other related statistical calculations required for proper preventive and corrective maintenance.

S3. Apply the concepts of continuous assessment to all laboratory services by creating, assessing, and choosing suitable instruments, procedures, and techniques based on their applicability and feasibility.

Competency:

C1. Appraise business skills and activities required for successful management and operation of clinical laboratory facility.

C2. Possession of sufficient knowledge with established laboratory safety rules and regulations governing regulatory compliance related to laboratory practice.

C3. Conducts ethical and professional acts toward proper reporting and protecting the privacy of patient information.

C4. Communicate through oral and written skills, effectively and professionally to enable consultative interactions in academic and professional settings to function successfully as a member of the healthcare team.

C5. Utilize the acquired skills and theories toward improvement of healthcare delivery systems performance in the context of laboratory service, operations, financial management, and human resource management to facilitate high-quality laboratory services.
