Implementation of a comprehensive smoke-free campus policy, including creation and review dates

Introduction:

Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) has officially adopted and fully implemented a Comprehensive Smoke-Free Campus Policy to ensure a clean, safe, and healthy academic environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The policy was first issued in January 2021 and formally reviewed and reaffirmed in March 2025 by the University Council and the Sustainability & Global Ranking Center, in coordination with the Dean of Student Affairs.

This regulation prohibits all forms of smoking, including traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, vaping devices, and shisha, throughout all indoor and outdoor areas of the campus, with no designated smoking zones permitted.
Implementation is ensured through visible “No Smoking” signage, periodic campus inspections, and disciplinary procedures for violations.

To support enforcement and awareness, AAU organizes annual anti-smoking and health-promotion campaigns, such as the “Wellness Ambassadors” initiative and specialized training courses delivered by the Women’s Health Center in cooperation with the King Hussein Cancer Center.
These programs educate students on the dangers of tobacco use and encourage a culture of well-being and responsibility.

Through this comprehensive approach, AAU demonstrates its long-term institutional commitment to preventive public-health measures and sustainable campus wellness, fully aligned with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

1. AAU Establishes On-Campus Smoking Cessation Clinic to Support a Tobacco-Free Environment

As part of the implementation of its Smoke-Free Campus Policy, Al-Ahliyya Amman University established an on-campus Smoking Cessation Clinic to support students, staff, and faculty in quitting smoking. The clinic provides free medical and counseling services, awareness materials, and follow-up sessions to encourage a healthier lifestyle and prevent relapse. Operated under the Facilities Department and in collaboration with the Dean of Student Affairs, the clinic reinforces AAU’s commitment to maintaining a 100% smoke-free campus and promoting public health in alignment with SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

1. AAU Student Appointed as WHO Wellness Ambassador to Promote Anti-Smoking Awareness

Al-Ahliyya Amman University student Bana Al-Saafin was selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Crown Prince Foundation’s Nahno Platform as a Wellness Ambassador to promote health awareness and anti-smoking advocacy in Jordan. A long-time volunteer and president of the “AAU Youth Against Cancer” club, Bana represented AAU and Jordan in the Arab Youth Empowerment Conference in Riyadh as part of the “Nashama” leadership program. Her appointment highlights the success of AAU’s Smoke-Free Campus Policy and its commitment to cultivating student leadership in health promotion and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

2. AAU Women’s Health Center Conducts Anti-Smoking and Prevention Workshop in Collaboration with King Hussein Cancer Center

The Women’s Health Center at Al-Ahliyya Amman University organized an awareness workshop titled “The Dangers of Smoking, E-Cigarettes, and Hookah” in collaboration with the King Hussein Cancer Center’s Cancer Control Office. The session highlighted the health risks of all forms of smoking and emphasized the importance of prevention and early intervention. It also provided information about free smoking cessation clinics across Jordan offering medical and psychological support. The workshop, attended by nursing students and faculty members, reflects AAU’s strong commitment to promoting a smoke-free campus and advancing SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through continuous health education and collaboration with national health institutions.

3. AAU Faculty of Dentistry Hosts ‘Arab Health Ambassadors Project’ Workshop in Collaboration with WHO and KHCC to Combat Smoking

The Faculty of Dentistry at Al-Ahliyya Amman University, in collaboration with the King Hussein Cancer Center, the Jordanian National Society for Smoking Prevention, and the World Health Organization (WHO), organized a training workshop titled “Arab Health Ambassadors Project.” The event aimed to train and qualify youth aged 15–35 to become health ambassadors, promoting public health and combating smoking in their communities. The interactive sessions addressed topics such as smoking prevention, health leadership, and effective strategies to reduce tobacco use in Jordan and the Arab region. Held at Al-Hourani Auditorium, this workshop forms part of AAU’s sustained efforts to promote a Smoke-Free Campus Policy and advance SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through education, leadership, and community engagement.
