Community Education (7.4.1)

Programs for local communities on clean energy use and energy efficiency awareness.

Introduction:

Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) places strong emphasis on community education and public engagement as part of its commitment to SDG7 – Affordable and Clean Energy.
The University implements a wide range of programs that raise awareness on clean energy, sustainable living, energy-efficient behavior, and environmentally responsible practices among schools, households, community organizations, and public-sector institutions.

These programs are designed and delivered collaboratively by academic faculties, sustainability units, innovation centers, and community service departments. They include workshops, awareness campaigns, public lectures, training sessions, educational visits, and open-access digital resources.
AAU’s approach ensures that knowledge on renewable energy, smart buildings, clean mobility, and efficient resource use reaches audiences beyond the campus, supporting national sustainability efforts and empowering communities with practical skills.

AAU shares best practices with the community by showcasing its smart-building systems, automated lighting, efficient HVAC models, and eco-friendly design approaches.

Impact Evaluation & Development Plan

  1. Performance Evaluation
    • Community education initiatives are formally integrated into AAU’s sustainability framework through documented policies and outreach procedures.
    • Programs effectively engage schools, youth groups, local organizations, and public-sector entities in clean-energy awareness.
    • Educational resources and workshops strengthen public understanding of renewable energy, efficient building design, and sustainable living.
    • Cross-department collaboration ensures that community programs address both technical knowledge and practical behavior change.
    • Digital platforms expand access to clean-energy learning materials beyond campus boundaries.
    • All initiatives align with national sustainability strategies and AAU’s commitment to environmental leadership.

  2. Development Actions

Action 1: Develop a digital Community Energy Learning Portal to host open-access courses and interactive educational content.

Action 2: Publish an annual Community Education & Outreach Report summarizing activities, beneficiaries, and outcomes.

Action 3: Expand partnerships with schools, municipalities، youth centers, and NGOs to deliver clean-energy workshops and hands-on training.

Action 4: Provide specialized training for community educators, volunteers, and student ambassadors on effective energy-awareness communication.

Action 5: Introduce evaluation indicators to measure changes in community awareness, behavioral impact, and adoption of clean-energy practices.

  3. Benchmarking & Best Practice

    Adopted Global Best Practices

    • Modeled on UNESCO and UNEP frameworks for community-based environmental education.
    • Incorporates global principles of inclusive sustainability outreach and lifelong learning for clean energy.

    Localization to Jordan’s Context

    • Programs support national clean-energy strategies and climate-education initiatives.
    • Community workshops are tailored to local environmental challenges, cultural needs, and social priorities.

    Future Goal (By 2028):

AAU aims to establish a national model for clean-energy community education through a fully digitized, collaborative, and impact-driven outreach ecosystem.

    Institutional Integration Summary

Community education is fully embedded in AAU’s institutional identity through structured programs, digital platforms, and cross-department collaboration.
By providing accessible learning opportunities, practical workshops، and open educational resources, AAU empowers communities with the knowledge and skills needed for clean-energy adoption and sustainable living.
