Introduction:
Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) has adopted a comprehensive clean-energy and climate-action framework that advances SDG7 Affordable and Clean Energy through large-scale renewable energy production, smart-building integration, institutional energy-efficiency policies, and community outreach programs. Between 2023 and 2025, AAU transformed its energy landscape by achieving full reliance on 100% renewable energy, producing more electricity than it consumes, and reducing its carbon footprint to zero metric tons, supported by advanced solar systems, wind turbines, hydropower integration, and a photovoltaic-powered central cooling and heating unit.
The University’s energy governance system is supported by a wide network of institutional units including the Sustainability & International Ranking Center (SIRC), Hourani Center for Applied Scientific Research, Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Human Resources Unit, Engineering Faculty, and key administrative departments that collaboratively implement energy-efficiency procedures, monitor consumption, and manage renewable-energy performance.
AAU’s clean-energy strategy is grounded in official policies, including the University Building Energy Efficiency Policy, Carbon Management and Emissions Reduction Policy, Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Education Policy, and the Innovation and Low-Carbon Economy Support Policy. These are complemented by procedures for new-build energy standards, carbon-emissions management, community energy education, industry energy consultations, and support for low-carbon startups.

During the 2024–2025 reporting period, Al-Ahliyya Amman University achieved one of its most significant sustainability milestones by becoming fully energy independent, with renewable energy generation surpassing total campus electricity demand. This accomplishment resulted in a completely carbon-neutral campus powered entirely by clean energy.
This success was made possible through the University’s integrated clean-energy infrastructure, which includes extensive rooftop and façade solar systems, photovoltaic-powered central cooling and heating technologies, small-scale wind installations, and hydropower mechanisms utilizing treated water flow. In parallel, AAU advanced energy-efficiency measures across all smart buildings through automated management systems, high-efficiency lighting, advanced HVAC solutions, natural daylighting strategies, indoor-air monitoring, and resource-efficient fixtures.
The University maintained an exceptionally high adoption rate of energy-efficient appliances, supported by large-scale LED implementation, automated lighting controls, and high-performance cooling and heating units across academic, administrative, and sports facilities. These achievements were reinforced by well-established policies governing construction standards, energy audits, emissions management, and clean-energy education across all faculties.
Innovation remained central to AAU’s clean-energy strategy, with IoT-based monitoring systems, predictive-analysis dashboards, smart meters, and automated consumption-control technologies continually enhancing performance. The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship further supported low-carbon technological development, while engineering faculties advanced applied research in solar optimization, energy modeling, and climate resilience.
Community engagement efforts expanded as well, including school programs, training initiatives for local industries, and national collaborations promoting sustainable energy and green mobility—most notably the University’s partnership with leading electric-vehicle providers to strengthen EV education and awareness.

Energy performance across campus smart buildings improved through the expansion of LED lighting systems, zonal and automated lighting controls, occupancy-based sensors, VRF/VRV air-conditioning technologies, daylight-harvesting strategies, and advanced building-management automation. Indoor environmental quality further benefited from modern ventilation systems, CO₂ monitoring, acoustic enhancements, and increased natural-light integration.
This period also introduced several innovative digital solutions, including IoT-enabled energy-monitoring platforms, predictive analytics tools for solar-energy optimization, and real-time dashboards tracking energy production and consumption. These efforts were reinforced by substantial research contributions in renewable-energy engineering and sustainability science, resulting in a growing body of academic outputs aligned with SDG7 and SDG13.
In parallel, AAU expanded its societal role by offering clean-energy awareness programs for schools and communities, providing energy-efficiency consulting to local industries, and hosting training initiatives focused on renewable energy, sustainability, and green innovation.
Collectively, the achievements of 2023–2024 formed the essential groundwork for AAU’s complete renewable-energy transformation in the following year, demonstrating strong and sustained institutional commitment to SDG7.

Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) demonstrates a mature and transparent governance model that fully aligns with SDG16 principles of accountability, participation, and institutional integrity. Governance representation is formally established through approved policies, procedures, and publicly accessible governance structures, all published on the University’s official platforms to ensure clarity and institutional transparency.
The University maintains a multi-level representation system that ensures active participation from students, faculty members, researchers, administrative staff, and senior leadership across all councils and decision-making committees. Weekly President–Deans meetings serve as a structured communication channel that strengthens academic input, supports responsive governance, and fosters a culture of institutional collaboration.
All governance processes, including appointments, council formation, consultation mechanisms, and review cycles, are fully compliant with governance expectations set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, ensuring that AAU’s governance framework is aligned with national regulations and international standards.
These elements collectively confirm that governance representation at AAU is operational, transparent, and institutionally embedded, effectively integrating diverse perspectives into strategic decision-making.

Action 1: Digitize the selection and nomination process for all university representatives to enhance transparency, accessibility, and fairness.
Action 2: Publish an Annual Governance Representation Report detailing elected or appointed members, their roles, contributions, and council outcomes.
Action 3: Provide specialized training workshops on governance ethics, integrity, conflict-of-interest management, and SDG-aligned decision-making for all representatives.
Action 4: Develop a dedicated communication and participation platform enabling representatives to collect feedback, concerns, and suggestions from their respective communities.
Action 5: Introduce performance evaluation indicators to measure effectiveness, responsiveness, transparency, and impact of representation across governance bodies.
