Employees with Disabilities [Statistics] (10.5)
Introduction:
Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) is firmly committed to promoting an inclusive and equitable working environment that guarantees equal employment opportunities for all, including individuals with disabilities. The University’s Employment Equity and Accessibility Policy ensures that no candidate or staff member is discriminated against based on physical, sensory, intellectual, or psychological disability.
AAU’s Human Resources Department, in cooperation with the Disability Support Office (DSO) and the Sustainability & Development Office (SDO), maintains a systematic mechanism for identifying, supporting, and monitoring employees with disabilities. This framework includes reasonable workplace accommodations, assistive technologies, accessible facilities, and continuous professional development programs that allow all staff to perform effectively and safely.
As of the 2024–2025 academic year, employees with disabilities represent an integral part of the university’s workforce, contributing to teaching, administration, maintenance, and technical operations. The university’s Diversity Employment Register, managed by the HR Department, records both academic and administrative employees who have declared disabilities, with full confidentiality and respect for privacy.
In accordance with national legislation and UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), AAU ensures that at least 2–3% of total employees are persons with disabilities, consistent with Jordanian labor regulations and international best practices. These employees benefit from adaptive office layouts, accessible transportation, ergonomic furniture, and digital tools designed to enhance inclusion and productivity.
Furthermore, the university actively collaborates with the Al-Hussein Society for Training and Inclusion, the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and local NGOs to promote inclusive hiring, staff training, and awareness campaigns on workplace accessibility. All new staff orientations include diversity and inclusion training, reinforcing the institutional culture of empathy, equality, and empowerment.
This approach aligns directly with SDG Target 10.2 (Social and Economic Inclusion) and 10.3 (Equal Opportunity and Non-Discrimination) and is continuously evaluated through the AAU Sustainability & Global Ranking Dashboard to ensure measurable progress and transparent reporting of diversity indicators.
