Title: The Empowerment Educator: Fusing Innovation, Inclusion, and Impact

Name: Lecturer. Aya Khalaf

As an educator, I strive to inspire innovation and social awareness in my students. From this mission, and through my involvement with the Jordanian Chemical Society, "The Chemical Bus" was born under the motto: "Spark Day" This initiative leads university students on outreach visits to underprivileged schools, hospitals, and health centers, where they conduct eco-friendly, hands-on chemistry experiments. Free of hazardous materials, these sessions are safe, engaging, and educational for all.
The project fosters community service, sustainability, and creativity, while also developing students’ soft skills in communication, leadership, and interactive teaching.
Notable visits include Sukaina Bint Al-Hussein School, where experiments promoted curiosity and knowledge-sharing, and Change Day events at Al-Bashir Hospitals and Princess Iman Center, where children some leaving hospital beds—joined joyfully in learning.
Across every initiative, The Chemical Bus reflects my teaching philosophy: to educate with compassion and create lasting human impact beyond the classroom.

Achievement

As an inspiring and impactful educator, I strive to innovate—not only in the classroom but also in shaping my students’ social awareness and future vision. Education, to me, goes beyond knowledge transfer; it is about building character, purpose, and a commitment to creating change. From this passion, along with my involvement in the Jordanian Chemical Society, the idea of "The Chemical Bus" was born, launched under the motto: "Spark Day."

This initiative reflects a deep commitment to community service, creativity, and sustainability. I lead teams of university students on outreach visits to underprivileged schools, hospitals, and health centers to conduct interactive, eco-friendly chemistry experiments. What makes this experience unique is its environmental consciousness—no hazardous materials are used, making all experiments safe, accessible, and engaging.

The project serves two key goals. First, it instills in students values of giving, empathy, and social responsibility, encouraging teamwork and active community involvement. Second, it helps them develop essential soft skills, including communication, leadership, and the ability to simplify complex scientific ideas for young audiences through playful, hands-on learning.

Each visit becomes a transformative experience. Students return feeling fulfilled and empowered, having made a visible impact. For the children, the experience is just as powerful—they discover science in an exciting, fun, and memorable way. These moments spark curiosity, boost confidence, and ignite a lifelong interest in learning.

Sukaina Bint Al-Hussein School, Ain Al-Basha

This visit included a range of educational and recreational activities designed to engage students, most notably eco-friendly scientific experiments from the fields of basic and pharmaceutical sciences. The Chemical Bus team conducted live demonstrations and clearly explained the scientific and practical aspects of each experiment. The initiative received enthusiastic participation from students and educators, promoting scientific curiosity, hands-on learning, and meaningful knowledge-sharing within the school community.

Change Day 1 – Al-Bashir Hospitals

Faculty members and students from multiple faculties at Al-Ahliyya Amman University took part in Change Day 1, held at Al-Bashir Hospitals in collaboration with the Emergency and Trauma Hospital, under the slogan: “The Patient’s Voice is the Foundation of Care.”

The initiative aimed to provide moral and emotional support to medical staff, patients, and their families. A series of eco-friendly chemistry experiments presented by university students brought excitement and joy to children, who actively participated with great enthusiasm. The day was filled with interactive learning, emotional moments, and lasting memories.

Change Day 2 – Princess Iman Research and Laboratory Sciences Center in Royal Medical Services
The day begins with our engaging eco-friendly experiments. The impact was deeply moving children, some of whom left their hospital beds eagerly joined the activities to learn, play, and interact. The joy on their faces reflected the success of the initiative. Gifts were distributed, and the event was filled with national songs and heartfelt moments of happiness, making it a truly memorable experience for both the children and their families.

Across every initiative, The Chemical Bus reflects my core teaching philosophy: to educate with purpose, connect through compassion, and empower future leaders through innovation. These experiences extend beyond science, they create lasting human impact.

Engagement and Impact

Using Technology in Education Innovative teaching

The educational environment is the foundation of learning and giving. The core principle I adopt in my teaching is "Teaching with respect", as giving students trust, compassion, and a sense of shared learning fosters many forms of creativity among them. Bridging the gap between the teacher and students enhances creativity and excellence — a truth I have witnessed throughout my 7 years of teaching experience. Additionally, I organize group-based activities during lectures to solve specific questions. These groupings are designed to integrate students from different backgrounds and cultures, promoting collaboration and inclusion. By the grace of God, I am pleased to share some student feedback that describes this teaching approach as “outstanding”.

With the advancement of science and the increasing demands of modern life, I was assigned by the university to develop the chemistry curriculum for students in dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, speech and hearing sciences, optometry, biotechnology, and various branches of engineering. As part of this development, interactive and pre-recorded lectures were created, with assessment questions added at the end of each topic to evaluate students’ understanding of the material. This approach has made the learning process more effective, innovative, and engaging. Attached below are some images of the platform where the recorded materials are hosted. In addition, another dedicated platform has been developed, which contains recorded and documented scientific experiments to support and enrich the educational process.

Change Day

Faculty members and students from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences participated in the "Change Day" initiative, organized by the Hareer Foundation for Community Development and Entrepreneurship.
The event was held at Al-Bashir Hospitals, in cooperation with the management of the Emergency and Trauma Hospital, on Monday, September 18, 2023, under the slogan: “The Patient’s Voice is the Foundation of Care.” The activities took place within the Emergency and Trauma Hospital, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and the National Center for Rehabilitation Medicine. The aim was to provide moral and emotional support to medical staff, hospital employees, patients, and their families. A variety of activities were organized to bring joy to the children and their families, including gift distribution, health product giveaways, sweets, and medical and educational lectures delivered to attendees.

Free Medical Day

Collaboration between the Faculties of Allied Medical Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Pharmacy was at the heart of the free medical day at Bilal Bin Rabah primary school / Ain Al-Basha. The medical day activities included various medical check-ups, consultations, and the provision of free treatments for the local community in collaboration with the Specialized Hospital. The faculty staff played a key role in classifying and dispensing medications, as well as providing health and awareness consultations on disease prevention. This initiative had a significant positive impact by enhancing partnership and cooperation with various community groups.
