Title: Beyond Rankings: AAU’s Emerging Leadership in Global Higher Education

Name: Beyond Rankings

Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) is fast becoming a model of visionary leadership and global engagement in Arab higher education. Under a transformative leadership strategy focused on innovation, agility, and impact, AAU has achieved accelerated success across academic and research domains.
Its leap in the THE Arab University Rankings (from 91–100 in 2023 to 28th in 2024) and recognition in QS and AARU rankings reflect the institution’s momentum. Through strategic research marketing, smart dashboards, and global collaborations, AAU has elevated its research visibility—more than doubling its citations in a single year.
International accreditations from ABET, ACPE, AACSB, and ASIC validate AAU’s excellence in academic governance. Strategic partnerships, such as with the Swiss Education Group, enhance its international ecosystem.
With flagship facilities like the Smart Greenhouse and Animal House, and ambitious goals including carbon neutrality and entering the world’s Top 300 by 2030, AAU’s leadership team is not just keeping pace with global standards—it’s setting them.

Achievement

In a region undergoing dynamic transformation in higher education, Al-Ahliyya Amman University (AAU) has emerged as a trailblazing institution reshaping the meaning of academic leadership. Powered by a bold international outlook and anchored in innovation, agility, and strategic foresight, AAU exemplifies what a purpose-driven senior leadership team can achieve. AAU's operational model is grounded in three strategic pillars: clarity of institutional vision, execution through innovation and responsiveness, and commitment to long-term, measurable impact. This framework is embedded in a four-phase leadership cycle: Define, Activate, Evaluate, and Elevate—driving a deep-rooted culture of excellence and continuous transformation across the institution.
The results speak volumes. In the Times Higher Education Arab University Rankings, AAU skyrocketed from the (91–100) band in 2023 to 28th in 2024—a leap that demonstrates not only impact but also the velocity of institutional progress. Similarly, in the Association of Arab Universities (AARU) Rankings, AAU claimed the 16th position, marking its emergence as a regional leader in academic innovation and strategic execution.
Research excellence is a cornerstone of this momentum. International research collaborations surged to 72% in 2024, while the Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) saw remarkable growth. Citations more than doubled—from 6,800 in 2023 to 15,500 in 2024—outpacing regional peers and showcasing the power of AAU’s forward-thinking research and innovation strategy. A critical enabler of this success is AAU’s international research marketing model and the implementation of a smart benchmarking dashboard that tracks progress against leading universities regionally and globally.
AAU’s leadership team champions transparency, performance, and global alignment. The university is now ranked (601–800) globally in THE World University Rankings and holds a strong regional position in QS. It has earned a Five Stars rating in teaching, employability, and internationalization, while securing subject-specific recognition in Arts and Humanities, Business, Health Sciences, and Computer Science.
On the sustainability front, AAU ranked (201–300) globally in the THE Impact Rankings 2024 and stood out with a global 20th in SDG 4 (Quality Education) and 57th in SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), affirming the institution’s ethos of access and equity.
Credibility is further cemented by international accreditations from ABET, ACPE, AACSB, and ASIC, which reflect global standards in quality assurance and institutional governance. Strategic collaborations with world-class institutions, including the Swiss Education Group, have broadened AAU’s international ecosystem.
Investments in cutting-edge infrastructure—such as the Animal House and Smart Agricultural Greenhouse—have enhanced AAU’s capacity for interdisciplinary and applied research, contributing to its ranking in the (251–300) global band of the Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (ISR) 2025. Complementing these efforts, the university has launched Research Excellence Awards and hosted global forums on sustainability, digital transformation, and health innovation.
With its eyes set on 2030, AAU’s senior leadership aims to achieve carbon neutrality, earn a place in the Shanghai Rankings, and break into the world’s Top 300 in THE. The university is not only meeting change—it’s defining the future of higher education in the region and beyond.
