Concept & Added Value
Al-Ahliyya Amman University
The most pressing challenges of our time โ€” from climate change and public health crises to digital transformation and social inequality โ€” do not fit neatly within the boundaries of any single academic discipline. Solving them requires researchers who can think across fields, connect methods, and build knowledge that is greater than the sum of its parts.
This is the foundation of interdisciplinary research, and it is why Al-Ahliyya Amman University has made it a central pillar of its academic mission. AAU's commitment to interdisciplinary science is not a response to external pressures. It is a conviction: that universities which remain siloed within traditional disciplines will struggle to remain relevant, while those that bridge them will lead.
Research Approaches
To clarify AAU's institutional understanding of this field, the following distinctions outline the main research approaches relevant to interdisciplinary inquiry.
๐Ÿ”ฌ
Interdisciplinary Research
True interdisciplinary research does not simply invite multiple disciplines to the table. It integrates them. Concepts, methods, and analytical frameworks are combined to produce insights that could not emerge from any one field alone. This is the model AAU pursues: not parallel expertise sitting side by side, but genuine intellectual synthesis. A study on digital governance, for instance, is not a legal paper with a technology annex. It is a new kind of inquiry that neither law nor computer science could conduct alone.
PRIMARY APPROACH ยท AAU
๐Ÿ”—
Multidisciplinary Research
Multidisciplinary research brings different disciplines together around a shared problem, with each contributing its own perspective and methods independently. The result is a richer, more complete picture, but the disciplines remain distinct. This approach has real value, and much of AAU's collaborative research operates this way. The university sees it as a productive step toward deeper interdisciplinary integration.
COOPERATIVE APPROACH
๐Ÿ“š
Intradisciplinary Research
Single-discipline research remains the bedrock of academic knowledge. AAU continues to invest in specialized research within each of its colleges. Interdisciplinary ambition does not replace disciplinary depth. It builds upon it.
FOUNDATIONAL APPROACH
The Added Value of Interdisciplinary Research
Interdisciplinary research stands as one of the most vital tools for generating modern knowledge. By fostering integration across disciplines, it unlocks new horizons for innovation and delivers deeper, more comprehensive solutions to complex challenges:
1
Delivers Answers to Questions Disciplines Cannot Ask Alone
Some of Jordan's most urgent development challenges โ€” including water scarcity, healthcare access, digital infrastructure, and legal modernisation โ€” sit at the intersection of multiple fields. Interdisciplinary research gives AAU the capacity to engage with these challenges at the level of complexity they actually exist.
2
Generates Knowledge That Did Not Exist Before
When a pharmacist, a data scientist, and a behavioral psychologist work together on medication adherence, none of them is simply contributing their piece. They are producing a kind of understanding that their disciplines, separately, could not have reached. This is what AAU means when it speaks of novel knowledge.
3
Builds a Different Kind of Researcher
Interdisciplinary research trains faculty and graduate students to communicate across languages: scientific, social, technical, and legal. This capacity to translate, to synthesize, and to collaborate is increasingly what the world's research institutions, funding bodies, and employers are looking for.
4
Connects the University to Society
Research that crosses disciplines is more likely to connect to real problems and real people. AAU's interdisciplinary agenda is designed to strengthen the university's role as a knowledge partner for Jordan โ€” for its industries, its government, its communities, and its future.
5
Keeps the University Ahead of Where Knowledge Is Moving
The most dynamic research frontiers today โ€” including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, sustainability science, and computational law โ€” are all inherently interdisciplinary. Universities that position themselves at these intersections now will be the universities that matter most in the decades ahead. AAU has made a deliberate choice to be one of them.
6
Strengthens AAU's Global Standing
Interdisciplinary research is increasingly how the world measures research quality. International rankings, funding competitions, and academic partnerships all increasingly favour institutions that can demonstrate genuine cross-disciplinary depth. AAU's investment in interdisciplinary science is an investment in its long-term competitiveness โ€” not as an end in itself, but as evidence of the kind of university AAU is becoming.
๐Ÿ“Œ
Interdisciplinary research is not a program AAU runs. It is a way of thinking that AAU is building across its colleges, its research teams, its graduate students, and its institutional culture. The pages in this section document where that work stands today and where it is headed.
