Dr. Anan Abu Maryam Attends Key Meeting on Disability Rights at Senate Council

On March 28, 2024, Dr. Anan Abu Maryam, Director of the Counseling and Special Education Center at the Faculty of Educational Sciences, AAU, participated in a pivotal meeting of the Committee on Persons with Disabilities. The meeting, chaired by Her Excellency Senator Asya Yaghi, took place at the Senate Council and included distinguished senators and ministers. The agenda focused on discussing critical aspects of Law No. 20 of 2017, which addresses the rights of persons with disabilities. Senator Yaghi emphasized that the meeting's purpose was to refine the law, inspired by the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The revisions aim to align with ongoing advancements and ensure the effective implementation of the law by the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which plays a crucial role in proposing and enacting disability-related legislation. Dr. Abu Maryam highlighted the importance of viewing disability rights through a contemporary, rights-based lens rather than an outdated welfare approach. He pointed out that although Jordan has made significant strides by ratifying the International Convention and publishing it in the Official Gazette, there is still a need for tangible improvements in the programs and services offered to persons with disabilities. During the meeting, Dr. Abu Maryam presented a detailed file justifying the need for amendments to the Law on Persons with Disabilities. This file included practical insights into the implementation of existing policies and underscored the urgent requirement for their effective application by relevant entities to keep pace with current developments.
