Introduction

At Al-Ahliyya Amman University, we are proud to lead many sustainability projects, engaging more than 67 partners from academia, industry, and government sectors across local, regional, and international levels. The projects listed below represent the main initiatives among our extensive portfolios. These projects not only showcase our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability but also highlight our role as a leader in pioneering sustainable practices within the educational sector and beyond. Through these collaborations, we aim to drive significant change and set benchmarks in sustainability that resonate globally.

Green Campus Initiative Project:

Objective: Develop a comprehensive plan to reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency, and utilize renewable energy sources. The Hub has implemented and shared various international protocols across the university to enhance its sustainability reporting and understanding of international standards. These include but not limited the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions and Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Solar Panel Project – Phases 1 to 4:

Objective: Phases1,2, 3 and 4 Project: Continue the expansion of the solar panel initiative. Having completed Phase 3, the project is on track for Phase 4, which aims to fully meet the university's electricity needs through renewable solar energy by 2025.

Student Sustainability Club:

Objective: Establish a club with 200 active members by the end of the first year to engage in sustainability projects. This also includes the Sustainability Network Club, which is to provide professional development, education, and community engagement related to the three pillars of sustainability: the environment, the economy, and social equity.

Water-Wise Campus Project:

Objective: Reduce water usage by 25% by 2026 through technological and behaviour change interventions.

  • SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)

 

Fostering Mindful Water Usage Project:

Objective: Launch community outreach programs to promote water conservation.

Aligned SDGs:

  • SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)

 

Zero Waste Campaign Project:

Objective: Achieve a recycling rate of 70% and reduce campus waste by 50% by 2025.

Sustainable Landscaping Project:

Objective: Convert 50% of campus green areas to use native plants by 2027 to enhance biodiversity and reduce maintenance.

Energy Efficiency Audits:

Objective: Conduct annual energy audits to identify inefficiencies and reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2025.

Eco-Friendly Procurement Policy:

Objective: Ensure 80% of campus procurement meets sustainability criteria by 2026.

Academic programs and study plan development Project

Objective: Sustainability isn't a siloed subject at AAU. It's integrated across the curriculum, ensuring all students gain exposure to environmental issues and graduate as responsible global citizens. AAU further promotes knowledge sharing by hosting seminars, workshops, and conferences, fostering collaboration and idea exchange on a broader scale.

Through this dedication to education, research, and knowledge sharing, AAU is not just educating future generations, but actively shaping a more sustainable future for our planet.

SDGs and Climate Change Literacy Workshops Initiative:

Objective: Conduct 10 workshops annually to educate the local community on sustainable living.

Energy Assistance Programs:

Objective: Assist 10 local homes and businesses annually to enhance their energy efficiency through grants and expertise sharing.

Regional Sustainability Conference:

Objective: Host an annual conference with over 300 attendees to discuss sustainability challenges and innovations.

Collaborative Research Projects:

Objective: Partner with other universities or organizations to address regional environmental issues. This includes funding Digitizing Material Identity: Blockchain as a Catalyst for Enhanced Material Passport Systems project. An intuitive interface can significantly lower barriers to the use of such systems. The research aims to understand how such a blockchain-based material passport system can enhance traceability, sustainability, and efficiency within the construction industry.

International Research Collaboration:

Objective: Collaborate with international universities on sustainability research and innovative projects. The hub also contributes to international standards, notably AS7739.2, which focuses on sustainable Smart Cities. The university holds the unique distinction of being the first and only institution from the region involved in this pioneering initiative, extending its influence beyond the academic realm into global policy shaping.

Global Sustainability Network:

Objective: Create a network of 15 universities worldwide by 2028 to share best practices and resources.

Objective: Develop exchange programs with 10 international universities focused on sustainability by 2026.

Planting Hope

Objective: A project to plant trees in areas affected by drought or desertification.

Tables of Goodness

Objective: An initiative to distribute free breakfast meals to those in need during Ramadan.

  • SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)

 

Breaking Barriers

 Objective: A project to enhance interaction between people with special needs and ordinary people through joint events and activities.

Women's Centre Development Project

Objective: A project to support and empower female students, faculty, and staff by providing resources, advocacy, and programming that addresses gender-related issues and promotes gender equality.

Lifelong Learning

Objective: Continuing educational programs to help graduates keep pace with developments in their professional fields.

Donate for peace and relief

Objective: To raise funds and gather resources to support humanitarian efforts in areas affected by conflicts or natural disasters.

Green transportation Project (electronic vehicle)

Objective: Promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.

Sustainable Mineral Tourism Dead Sea

Objective: To develop a sustainable tourism model that leverages the unique mineral resources of the Dead Sea without degrading its natural environment or the quality of its mineral-rich waters.

PhD program in Sustainability Management and Technology

Objective: Al-Ahliyya Amman University is also excited about the introduction of a new PhD program in Sustainability Management and Technology, representing an interdisciplinary effort involving four colleges: Business, Engineering, IT, and Architecture. This program is tailored to prepare future leaders capable of merging sustainability visions with technological innovations, aiming to foster impactful solutions across industries.

Create a living laboratory

Objective: Transform a portion of the campus into a living laboratory for sustainable practices, showcasing rainwater harvesting systems, green roofs, and sustainable landscaping.
