The Department of Optometry organizes an awareness day to celebrate the World Sight and Keratoconus Day
The Department of Optometry in the Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences at Al-Ahliyya Amman University organized an awareness ceremony on the World Sight and Keratoconus Day in collaboration with Medicals International. The Head of the Optometry Department, Dr. Yazan Gammoh stated that, the world celebrates the World Sight and Keratoconus Day on the tenth of November every year to raise awareness of keratoconus disease. The cornea is the transparent layer that covers the eye (iris and the pupil) which controls and focuses the entry of light into the eye. Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea thins and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape, where it becomes weak and thinner and therefore cannot maintain its normal shape. A cone-shaped cornea affects the vision by causing blurred vision and may cause sensitivity to light and glare as well as causes myopia, a common vision condition in which near objects appear clear, but objects farther away look blurry.Dr. Yazan also referred to the objectives of the World Keratoconus Day, to raise awareness of the necessity of diagnosing keratoconus, support people with keratoconus to live a normal life, activate corneal examination programs. In addition to raising awareness among community members, researchers and health professionals on the impact of keratoconus on the lives of those affected by the disease, their families, and friends.
